Ash Class (Reception)

Hi everyone, welcome to Ash Class!

Ash Class is currently made up of 28 Reception children. The class teacher is Mrs Long (Monday to Thursday) and the class teaching assistants are Mrs Ward and Mrs Lapworth; Mrs Trousdale also teaches the children on a Friday.

In Ash class our school expectations are very important to us and we teach the children them right from the start of the year. ‘Be Safe, Be Kind, Aim High’.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) there are seven ‘Areas of Learning’ and each area has its own ‘Early Learning Goals’. Every child works towards achieving these goals throughout their Reception year. There is lots of focus on speaking and exploring new language, each week we introduce new words to the children using actions to help, with the aim of extending their vocabulary; these words are linked to stories which we are using in class.

In maths, we focus on number and numerical patterns; we will be working on numbers to 10, really exploring and getting to know them and eventually extending up to 20. The children are also learning to subitise (meaning that they can recognise amounts without having to count them) In phonics, we will be using the Pearson phonics scheme to help us learn new sounds and practise blending them. Every child has their own individual Pearson accounts which we send games and activities on to support our phonics learning in class. The children’s physical reading books which we send home and guided reading books are also linked to Pearson. In guided reading sessions (book club) the children share a story together in small groups, the Pearson books are lovely and the children enjoy reading them.

P.E. is on a Tuesday. These sessions are focused around the children becoming secure in 5 early fundamental movement skills these include running fast, hopping, jumping for distance, throwing underarm and overarm and finally catching. Once we have practised these skills in P.E. the children have lots of opportunities to continue practising them in their playful learning.

Forest School and Outdoor Learning

We  have the most beautiful grounds and love to make good use of them. We are very excited as our outdoor area has recently been extended and we now have a lovely space which we plan to develop this year. We believe that children should be enjoying the outdoors and be physically active as much as possible.

The National trust have come up with a wonderful list of 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4. Click below to have a look at some of these fantastic outdoor activities to enjoy together from the National Trust. Why not see how many you can tick off at the weekends.

You won’t be able to do all of these activities but see how many you could have a go at. After all you’re only 4/5, you have plenty of time to finish them off
