Pine Class (Year 4)

Welcome to Year 4 Pine Class!

We are delighted to welcome you to Pine Class and look forward to a year filled with learning, creativity, curiosity and fun. Guided by our school Bible verse, “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14), we encourage children to work hard, show kindness and take pride in their achievements. We aim to create a happy, supportive environment where every child feels valued, confident and motivated to reach their full potential.

Our Week

PE takes place on Tuesday afternoons. Children should have their PE kit in school each week. This consists of black or navy shorts, a plain white T-shirt and trainers.

Swimming takes place on Thursdays at Carnforth Pool. Children should bring their swimming kit into school on this day.

Homework is set each Friday. Weekly spellings and times table activities are practised throughout the week using Spelling Shed and TT Rock Stars and are tested the following Friday. Regular reading at home is also encouraged to help children develop their fluency, comprehension and enjoyment of books.

Our Curriculum

Throughout the week, children take part in a wide range of exciting and engaging lessons across the curriculum. From investigating scientific questions and exploring historical events to creating artwork, learning French and developing computing skills, every day provides opportunities for children to be curious, creative and enthusiastic learners. Our curriculum is designed to inspire children, broaden their knowledge and help them make meaningful connections in their learning.

English

In English, children will enjoy a wide range of stories, poetry and non-fiction texts. Through exciting reading and writing opportunities, they will develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar and writing skills across a variety of genres. This year, we will explore a number of engaging texts, including The Unsolved Mystery of the Loch Ness Monster, The Pied Piper, Gulliver’s Travels, The Mousehole Cat and The Last Bear. These texts will inspire children to write narratives, poetry, information texts, newspaper reports and persuasive pieces while encouraging creativity, curiosity and a love of reading.

Maths

Children will develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills across key areas of mathematics, including place value, the four operations, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry and statistics. A particular focus in Year 4 is building confidence and fluency in multiplication tables in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check.

Science

Our science learning includes Electricity, Sound, States of Matter, Animals Including Humans, the Human Digestive System and Living Things and Their Habitats. Through practical investigations and enquiry-based learning, children will develop their scientific knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

RE

Children will explore David and the Psalms, Christmas Light, Hanukkah, Jesus the Son of God, Easter: Betrayal and Trust, Are All Churches the Same? and What Is Prayer? These topics encourage children to reflect on faith, beliefs and values while developing their understanding of Christianity and other world religions.

History

We will investigate the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, discovering how they lived, the challenges they faced and the lasting impact they had on Britain.

Geography

Our geography learning focuses on settlements and land use, map-reading skills and rivers. Children will develop their understanding of both human and physical geography while strengthening their geographical enquiry and fieldwork skills.

Computing

Children will develop their understanding of computer science and digital technology through a range of engaging activities. They will learn coding skills, create digital content, work with data and develop an understanding of how to stay safe and responsible online.

PE

Children will develop a range of physical skills through games, gymnastics, athletics and outdoor activities. They will learn the importance of teamwork, perseverance and good sportsmanship while improving their coordination, balance, agility and fitness. Swimming lessons also provide opportunities for children to build water confidence and develop essential swimming skills.

French

Children will develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French through a range of engaging topics. They will learn everyday vocabulary, simple conversations and key grammatical structures, helping to build confidence and enthusiasm for language learning.

Art, Design and Technology and Music

Children will have many opportunities to develop their creativity and express themselves through art, design and music. In Art, they will explore storytelling through drawing, observational drawing, the work of Barbara Hepworth, clay work and landscape painting while experimenting with a range of media and techniques. In Design and Technology, children will design and make electrical circuit ornaments, develop sewing skills through purse making, and design and prepare food, building their practical skills and creativity. Through Music, children will develop their singing, listening, performing and composing skills, exploring different musical styles while growing in confidence as performers and musicians.

Special Events and Experiences

Throughout the year, children will enjoy a range of enriching experiences, including an exciting Anglo-Saxon Day, a class assembly, curriculum-linked visits and an outdoor learning trip. These opportunities help bring learning to life and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom.
