Healthy Schools Team

The Healthy School Team plays a very important role in our school. Their responsibilities include assisting at lunchtimes in the dinner hall; helping the younger children to make healthy food choices, making sure they drink enough and encouraging good table manners. They meet regularly to discuss wider healthy school/ sporting issues and also lead assemblies to teach the other children about healthy lifestyles.

A big ‘hello’ from our Healthy School Team!

Healthy fruits and vegetablesWe are your healthy school team and we are here to help you make good food choices. Have a look at the Eat-well plate below. This tell you the kind of foods you need to eat to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. You can see that it is still ok to eat some ‘fatty’ foods but only in moderation and as part of a well balanced diet.

Lunch time themes

The healthy school team has decided upon a list of weekly themes which we will focus on throughout the year during lunchtimes. They are on the look out for children who are doing a particularly good job demonstrating these themes. Some of which include, good manners, making healthy choices, trying something new, handling knives and forks correctly, lining up nicely.

A plea from our Healthy School Team

We take eating healthily really seriously at school, we discuss healthy eating with the children and encourage them to make healthy choices.

We have a policy that only fruit, vegetables and in key stage 2 suitable cereal bars can be eaten at playtimes and request that parents do not send in sweets or fizzy drinks for lunchtimes.

water, lemon, fruit juice, drink

All children have their own water bottles which they are encouraged to drink from regularly throughout the day. The healthy school team loves drinking water!

A little bit about what we do here at St Wilfrid’s

There are many sports clubs run both by staff and outside agencies. We teach children about making good choices to do with their health, such as promoting and encouraging Healthy Eating. ‘Keeping Healthy’ is very much embedded throughout the curriculum too e.g. our healthy living theme in KS1. We are also visited each year by the Life Education Van, where every child receives an age appropriate interactive learning session. Everyone loves Harold the giraffe! Willow and Ash class recently went to Tesco’s to find out about the importance of making healthy food choices and learn where our food comes from!

We never tell children that there are things they can’t eat, rather we encourage them to think about the food they eat in terms of a balanced diet, it is good for us to eat more of some foods than others. In particular we encourage the children to remember the ‘Eat 5 A Day’ idea, for fruit and vegetables.

The Eat Well Plate clearly shows the proportions of each food group that the government recommends we eat per day. We introduce the children to this model right from their first year at school.
